Some of the most powerful methods of generating leads for your business are articles and press releases, social marketing, forum, ezine and directory marketing, video marketing and classifieds and traditional print media marketing.

Whatever you choose, your goal should be to get as much of your marketing as possible on autopilot. After all, we don’t know about you, but we didn’t start our home business to be slaving away at our desk all day!

There is no better feeling than waking up to a new day and realizing over a coffee that you just made $1000 or $2000 in your sleep, thanks to an online marketing system that works around the clock.

One of the best ways to automate your marketing is by using pay-per-click advertising. Most of the search engines offer this service but by far and away the most popular is Google, whose service is known as Google Adwords.

As the name suggests, pay-per-click advertising means you only pay when someone actually clicks on your ad. And the great thing about it is that it is trackable and it allows you to position yourself on the search engine with your ad, right at the moment when your potential customer or business partner is searching for what you have to offer.

Google Adwords allows you to generate leads at will for all time. You can set a budget and forget. But it is absolutely vital to learn the ropes before taking the plunge. If you don’t know what you’re doing, Google Adwords can be one of the most effective ways of blowing your marketing budget you’ll ever find!

Spending a few bucks learning how to advertise effectively on Google will pay for itself hundreds of times over and prevent you paying the “stupid tax” on online advertising.

Automating your marketing using free marketing methods is more of a challenge but the good news is that with a concerted effort at the outset your marketing efforts will continue to generate leads weeks, months and years down the road.

While Google Adwords is instantaneous and can generate leads for you within 15 minutes, free marketing can take longer and requires more elbow grease. Yet, unlike Google, which stops your exposure the second you shut off your campaign, the free marketing methods we’re about to cover here will put a permanent marker on the net, and your results will increase with time.

One of the fastest and simplest ways of free marketing is by video marketing. How to Boost your Relevance in Adwords

Google rewards you for having a URL that closely matches your keyword. This will give you a higher quality score and the keyword will be in bold font in the ad. So, you can drop the www and add a sub domain in your display url.

For example, if my keyword was Amway, my display url might be www.IanShiltonProMarketing.com/Amway

This allows me to pop in “Amway” one more time for relevance and to please the Gods of Google.

Let’s say your keyword phrase was “mortgage classes” in a campaign called “Real Estate” Your destination URL could be…

http://www.IanShiltonProMarketing.com/?site=MortgagePro&t=RealEstate-mortgageclasses

and the display URL could be…

Mortgage.IanShiltonMarketing.com

or

IanShiltonMarketing.com/Mortgage (it depends if you have enough characters to fit this in [35max] … that’s one reason to leave the www off)

Don’t forget to capitalize letters in your display URL to make it more readable. According to studies, when people scan the ads, the headline is the first thing they look at, the URL is the second and the body of the ad the last. Most people forget to make the URL look good.

So my disply url would read like this… IanShiltonMarketing.com

Not like this… www.IanShiltonProMarketing.com

See how the first one is easier to read because the capital letters differentiate and highlight each individual word. Placing the keyword into the various parts of the ad can be a very laborious task. The first way is to use Google’s Dynamic Keyword Insertion (DKI) options. The word on the street, however, is that Google will penalize you for using this. Too many people have written generic ads and used huge keyword lists to spam adwords.

So the solution is to use a tool to merge your keywords with your ads and build your campaign. I use Excel, in combination with Adwords Editor.

Dave suggests the best commercial tool out there is Speed PPC www.speedppc.com It is expensive, I don’t own it but all the reviews are excellent.
